March 29, 2017 Wednesday

We are on the road to Galveston TX. We are scheduled to arrive on Saturday for Noel's race on Sunday.

We left San Tan Valley at 9 AM and arrived Las Cruces NM at 5PM. Tomorrow we should spend the night in Fort Stockton TX. We lost one hour heading East when we left AZ.

The drive was uneventful, which is a good thing.

I am making this blog on my phone which is a little more difficult than the computer. I have pictures but it is too difficult to upload on my phone. Maybe next blog I'll try.

March 27,2017 Monday

This will probably be my final blog from AZ, but I may blog after Noel's race next Sunday.

Friday afternoon we entertained Ross and Laura for a BBQ of ribs.  We will miss them when we leave here.

Ribs on the grill

Saturday there was a yard sale in the park.  I think we bought more than we sold.  I bought this Weber grill for $35, which included a large bag of charcoal, on Friday before the sale.
a one touch bargain
Christy and Courtney came over for the sale and bought s a few items.  Afterwards Lela took them to the Salsa Lady's restaurant just outside the park for lunch.

Sunday, after our last time at Desert Sands Church of Christ, we went to lunch with Ross, Laura and their daughter Shannon at the Kona grill where we lunched once before.  They look like sisters!

Then it was home to begin packing the truck. as I write this there is still much to pack, but it can't be finished until I bring the Silver Star over from storage tomorrow.

Today we are going to Paul Jr.'s house for our final family get together this year. I'll get some pictures to post later.

March 24, 2017 Friday AM

We don't remember what we did on Monday, but I am guessing we just puttered around the ranch. I do know that Lela went to her aerobic class.  I talked to John about some damage to our yard art, which happened at the year end party over the weekend.  He was in the process of having it repaired.
Lela did laundry from the Tombstone weekend.

Tuesday Lela went to her class. I proceeded to build two benches for Christy.  They have a picnic table which needed benches, so that was my project for the day.  They turned out pretty well, but I didn't get a picture.

In the evening we had our friends from Nebraska, Ray and Cathy over for dinner.  Ray was one of the men who helped me spread the twenty tons of rock on our yard.  Cathy exercises with Lela in the mornings.

We had a very nice visit with them.  Ray was excited to have a roast with potatoes and gravy.  He said it was his favorite meal.  Needless to say, he had seconds.

Wednesday was my last golf day here.  I went out with a pretty good round.  I had three birdies in my round, two were back to back.  (44-38 for a total 82)  The 38 on the back nine is one over par, and I bogeyed 18 or I would have been  par on back side.  My partner Scott shot 76 which was his best round for the season.

Lela went to the park meeting in the morning.  In the afternoon she picked up Brenda, Scott's wife, and they went rock hounding at the edge of the desert.  Neither of them wanted to go too deep as the snakes and scorpions worry them.  Then they had lunch at the "Salsa Lady."

Yesterday, Thursday, we worked a little bit in the yard.  There were some plants that needed to be repotted and we accomplished that. I built a border around our Aloe plant using some bricks we already had.  It was a cold (65 degrees) and windy day with rain in the AM. Lela placed her rocks in the yard where she wanted them.

We have decided to head to Texas next Wednesday for Noel's race, so we have begun the process of packing and shutting things down here.

Lela went to exercise this morning and is doing laundry as I write.  We are expecting Ross and Laura over tonight for a rib fest on the grill.  There will probably be a picture or two of that on the next blog.
The Lemon tree is recovering and has a lot of blossoms.
Someone will harvest the lemons while we are gone.

March 19, 2017 Sunday PM
St. Joseph Day, Patron of Fathers
The swallows return to Capistrano on this day.

Our week began with the celebration of Ben's 17th birthday on Monday.
We went to his house for chicken, burgers and great family time. Paul Jr. did the burgers and Zachary is the chicken chef.

Paul Jr. and I had our ceremonial annual cigar while solving all the problems in the world.

Zach and G'pa tossing the baseball in the back yard. I still "got it."

If you can enlarge the pic you can see the ball in flight above the grape trellis.

Tuesday, Lela went to her aerobics class in the AM.  We went to the Salsa Ladies restaurant in the neighborhood nearby which is referred to as "little Mexico."  She sells only tacos on Tuesday for $2.00 each. Many of the park residents go there for "Taco Tuesday."

In the evening we were invited to a happy hour at John and Shelia's deck to say good by to Gary and Louise.  She had her knee replaced here and was heading home to Idaho for her therapy.  We will miss them.  John had grilled brats from the locally famous "Pork Shop." http://theporkshopaz.com/
When anyone asks where we live we tell them "near the Pork Shop" and they always know where we are.

Wednesday Lela went to the park meeting and I went to golf.  I had a very good round going until Hole 15.  I crashed and burned going 8 over on the last four holes with 3 penalty shots.  43-48 for 91.
I was still medicated for my cold, which I still can't seem to shake, but that wasn't why I crashed.

Thursday we prepared the Silver Star to travel to Tombstone, AZ for "Western Days" and a salute to the military.  Ross and Laura had made reservations for us at Tombstone RV Park. http://www.tombstonervparkandcampground.com/

When I took the SS out of the storage she had a flat tire.  Then I aired it up, but it lost 15 lbs. overnight so I  headed to Tire Discount in Queen Creek because I bought the tires from them online a few years ago. They said the repair was free, however when they found the puncture it was in the sidewall and couldn't be replaced.  They prorated the wear on the old tire and mounted a new one and we were off to Tombstone.  We followed Ross to the campground, arriving about 12:30 PM.  It was 165 miles from home.

our site #75

We drove into town and walked the streets shopping and taking pictures.  The town is just full of history and most of the buildings are authentic as they were in the 1880's.  My imagination just runs wild when we visit these old western towns.

We returned to the campground to watch the NCAA tournament game involving Arizona University and to BBQ for dinner.  I brought along our satelite system so we could watch the games.  But, as they say, the best laid plans oft times go astray.  I forgot to pack the remote control for the cable box, which rendered it useless.  Ross and I went in the park in search of a remote to work with my system.  We did find one so I was able to set up the satellite and put the TV on TBS so we could watch the game.  I had to return the remote to it's owner but we did watch the game.

Friday, St. Patrick's Day, Ross and I took about a three mile walk in the desert.
A leprechaun in the desert

When we returned we went to wine country. http://sonoitawineguild.com/wineries/  Ross drove and it was pretty much an all day affair. We drove through some beautiful Arizona country of mountains and plains.

We visited three wineries:  Kief-Joshua Vineyard, Flying Leap Vineyard and Callaghan Vineyards.

We had a great time with our friends. Then we drove into Tombstone for dinner at "Big Nose Kate's restaurant in Tombstone. http://bignosekates.info/

Saturday, Ross and I walked again about three miles in the desert and took a little target practice with "the Judge" and the "Bodyguard."  After our walk we returned to Tombstone in time for the St. Patrick's day and Western Days Parade.  It was really fun.  I'll add a bunch of pictures later and try to label them. Lela and I had lunch in the Longhorn Saloon.

In the afternoon we watched the Arizona game in the clubhouse,  grilled our supper and moved to the veranda for cigars and relaxation.

Sunday, we left at about 9 AM headed to The Benson Church of Christ for worship services.  They were beginning a Gospel meeting this morning, so we got the benefit of that.  After services we had lunch at their pot luck lunch.  It was a very enjoyable day.  Then it was back home, unload SS and laundry.  SS is back in the storage area and Lela and I are vegetating watching basketball.

Here are some pics taken over the weekend.
